What is Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)?

We are delighted to tell you we are using the very latest technology, the AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis Master, to help you get the best outcomes in the treatment and management of gum (periodontal) disease. The Swiss Made AIRFLOW®
Prophylaxis Master was developed in the EMS Research Centre with more than 100,000 hours of technical GBT is a systematic, predictable solution for dental biofilm (dental plaque) management in professional prophylaxis using AIRFLOW®, PERIOFLOW and PIEZON technologies. It is a minimally invasive technique to manage dental plaque, meaning less use of abrasive and sometimes sensitive instruments and equipment, which results in a better outcome regarding plaque levels in the mouth. AIRFLOW® is a revolutionary, non-contact form of dental maintenance and prevention. It projects a controlled stream of air, warm water and very fine, pleasant-tasting powder onto the tooth and in hard-to-reach areas to dislodge and remove food particles, plaque, discolouration and stains.
The high-pressure water/ air stream cleans your teeth much faster, efficiently and comfortably than the use of traditional polishing pastes. Since the water in the AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis Master heats to 40
degrees, it’s a positively warm experience! Clinical testing is conducted in collaboration with leading dental professionals from all over the world. It has been designed with the highest standards of performance, safety and comfort in mind.

What is dental biofilm?

Dental biofilm is a community of microorganisms in which cells stick to each other and to surfaces of the teeth and/or dental appliances in the mouth. Under a microscope, biofilm is visible as a complex 3d structure, which has been metaphorically described as “citica for microbes”. It is estimated that 1mm of dental plaque contains more than 200 million bacterial cells. If left untreated, dental biofilm can cause tooth decay and gum disease, which compromises your body’s immune defences, and has been linked to increasing the risk of getting systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular and respiratory disease, arthritis or diabetes, just to mention a few.

Many patients understand that plaque contains bacteria, which is damaging to both gums and teeth. However, not everyone is aware that plaque changes over time; immature plaque is far less damaging than plaque that has been left on gum tissue and teeth for an extended period.

The aim of GBT

Dental plaque is damaging to gums and teeth, it causes both gum disease and dental decay. GBT aims to both reduce the amount and the regrowth of dental biofilm. AIRFLOW PLUS POWDER prevents biofilm from forming as rapidly in the mouth. It contains Erythitol powder, which acts underneath gum tissue, around dental implants, bridges and orthodontic appliances. Most patients worry that hygiene sessions will cause pain and sensitivity, and unfortunately, ultrasonic cleaners and hand scaling can sometimes be painful. GBT aims to provide more effective biofilm management using a pain-free technique. AIRFLOW and PERIOFLOW use jets of water that are pre-warmed to body temperature. The powder is contained within the water and uses kinetic energy to remove plaque. Once your teeth are clean, the remaining powder acts as a gentle antibacterial to slow down the production of plaque, this is completely safe for use in both adults and children.

How is Airflow used?

When using the AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis Master device, dental professional will place a coloured dye (disclosing solution) onto your teeth to reveal any plaque and biofilm present in your mouth. This can be a great motivational tool to show you the areas in your mouth that you need to spend a little more time cleaning at home.
The jet of warm water and powder is then used to remove the biofilm. It is non-abrasive to hard tissue and can also be used on the tongue, cheeks and gums. It is the best solution for orthodontic appliances, dental appliances, bridges, crowns, veneers and implants (it can minimise the risk of peri-implantitis and reduce the loss of implants). If you have hard calcified plaque (calculus/tartar) dental professional may also need to use a PIEZON® ultrasonic on your teeth. However, the use of AIRFLOW® initially minimises the amount of time for which an ultrasonic is needed.

Are there other benefits of using Airflow and Perio flow?

Due to the nature of the powder, AIRFLOW and PERIOFLOW are also excellent at stain removal, better than conventional polishing pastes. Most patients do not require their teeth to be polished following the use of this system, and most report their teeth feeling smoother and remaining smoother for longer.
